Support just means tension or control of breathe
and sound. There are 2 areas of support they are your
diagrammatic muscles and your intercostal muscles. Diagrammatic
are situated below your lowest ribs at the front of the body and
your intercostal between each rib with the tension felt at the
side of the body. By pulling in your abdominal muscles when
singing a particularly high of low note creates a support or
hold, and prevents the diaphragm from collapsing. Support is an
essential technique to learn when singing. It helps pitch, tone,
clarity of sound; it creates a dynamic to the sound. It is not
safe to sing without some form of support. Unsupported sound my
have a tendency to jump up towards the throat.
There is a very simple exercise that in time will increase your
support muscles.
Simply breathe in and hold the air, relax in this position no
tension in the neck or shoulders. Then with sharp in ward
movements pull the muscles in towards your spine, keep an even
tempo and pull in 8 times. Make sure the stomach springs back
out after every pull in. If you are continually pulling back and
back and back, you are doing the exercise incorrectly. Imagine a
being punched in the stomach that is the sensation you are
looking for just without any other body movement. Try not to let
out any air and just simply exhale after the 8th pull
in.
