Resonance is to do with the amplification of the voice making it vibrate/resonate in different cavities also know as chambers of the sinuses or the chest. Resonance is about making choices about where you send the sound in your body. Each area of the body produces a different sound. For example, head resonance gives a light and bright quality to the sound where as chest resonance adds depth and warmth.

But like wise you can sing in your chest register and have head resonance or sing in your head voice with chest resonance. It is again about the visualisation of the sound in different areas of the body and the correct placement in order to change the tone of the sound.

The best way to practise resonance is to choose a note in the middle of the scale, place your fingers lightly on your check bones and hum. The sound should buzz and you should feel a vibration against your fingers. If you can’t feel it working try singing a higher note. This technique can be repeated for other types of resonance focussing on other parts of the body.
