Placement for me is more to do with focussing the sound, with
good pitch and tone. Once you have the correct breathe support
and posture it is important to place the sound.
Firstly,
The mask, the face,
Then correct forward placement, tonal projection, and
diction.
Think about where you are sending the sound.
It is important to sing with an open mask, which
basically means to sing with the check bones lifted. This allows
for a lighter and brighter sound. Also by raising the check
bones the sound is forced into one of the resonating chambers
necessary for a clear and pure sound. Forward placement
is more about a visual technique, about sending the sound away
from you. Thinking about a very straight road in front you and
visualise the sound moving along it. This example helps to
promote controlled and consistent tone and pitch.
Forwards placement in particular can also help clarity of
diction.
Memory from Cats is a perfect example of all aspects of
placement.
