Bad posture can really affect your voice. It is important to be aware of your stance, if not corrected it can lead to muscle tension. It can also reduce strength, breath control and vocal flexibility.

A check list for posture;

  • Make sure you are standing on an even surface with comfortable shoes or bare feet.
  • Your feet should be hip width apart and your knees soft, not locked.
  • Your back should be straight but not rigid and your shoulders relaxed but not slouching forward.
  • Arms down by your side and hands relaxed.
  • You should aim to have a long back of the neck and a short front of the neck with the chin slightly tucked in.
  • Your head tall and your eye line forward and fixed.
  • Once this position has been achieved try to relax.

The best way to achieve correct posture is to lie on the floor. In this position your body will not experience any muscle tension or stress. Try lying on the floor head resting on a small pillow, rise your legs so they are in an A frame with both feet flat on the floor. Try to relax and focus on your breathing. It might help to place your hands on your abdomen to truly connect with your breathing. Stay there for 10 whole breaths.
